Why GNU/Linux?
Published on November 13th, 2007.
I have to tell you that, I’m not a full time Linux user. Because some of my production software can only be ran on other platforms like Mac and Windows platforms. Of course it’s not a fancy thing to change your active OS many times during the day. And virtualization is not the ultimate solution for running multiple OSs in the same time.
Out of my production “shift”, my computer becomes an entertainment product. Surfing the web, listening some radios, watching movies even TV… Anyway, my computer is like a workhorse for serving me. Key position in my Life.
Basically, I don’t feel comfortable with the software which I can not manipulate when needed. There might be a objection at this point: It’s highly unlikely to find a sophisticated and/or complex open source software product for the production media which is open to people’s manipulation. In one angle yeah it’s true you can not find bunch of fancy software out there. But if you are in a state of comprehension of the production process, you can easily understand how is the program working. Of course this will not give you the freedom of manipulation of their code but this will give you a confidence you’ll somehow purified from your very very deep “heeyyy, gaaashh this piece of software reliable”
This was for production media. But I heartily know that out there thousands and thousands computers are sold just for instant messaging, buying and/or pirating music-movies, using facebook, watching youtube videos… I know that this thousands and thousands of computers a preloaded with propriety software which are blocking you to manipulate them. It’s obvious that the massive software vendors are looking for consumer cows. If you do not let the people manipulate or inspect your code you’ll obviously creating your untouchable software kingdom with a huge vassal.
When I use my computer as my Jukebox or Pandora’s Box or Pan’s Flute, I want to observe working ways & style of it in technical means. This makes me free because not turning to a consumer cow
Of course we’ll never be “free” in this capitalist era. But there is a resistance.
