Censorship in Turkey
New victim: Google Groups

Turkey becomes more aggressive on censoring web sites. Probably you heard about censorship efforts of several countries like China, Iran, UAE, Egypt etc. Turkey slips rapidly to that league with the fascistic laws on internet regulation. It’s not all about freedom of expression it’s about racist, fascist and totalitarian ideology of law making institutions.
As a contrary, Turkey is still celebrating the “Banning of Press Censorship”. It should be 101st anniversary of that ban now.
After a big wave of anti child abuse movement, Turkey approved a limited internet regulation into law. It’s called “Penal Code 5651 of Regulation of Internet Media and Struggling Crimes by the Manner of Internet Media”. This penal code includes insulting the Ataturk (founder of Turkish Republic), promoting gambling, suicide, drugs & child abuse which leads to fine punishment, jail sentence and banning of sites. The most tricky word is Ataturk which allows the “ideological annotation” of judges. Because of the fanatic & illiterate judges it’s not possible to criticize the holy founder ideology. Simply it’s a ban of freedom of expression.
Related new amendments proposed by AKP (governing political party) on penal code 301 is not enough. This jurisdictions like penal code 301 & 5651 must be totally repealed for the future of democracy in Turkey.
It’s highly likely that insulting Ataturk & Turkishness caused the banning of Google Groups in Turkey. A sad day for democracy and Freedom of Expression…
UPDATE: Access to Google Groups has been suspended because of the same guy who is very well known creationist made same thing to the Wordpress.com.
